Fluoride

Fluoride is a non-metallic trace mineral that promotes strong teeth and bones, and improves the body's absorption of calcium. In children, it helps their bones harden and prevents tooth decay. In the elderly it can help reduce the incidence of bone fractures, and it may be a factor in preventing osteoporosis. Most of us obtain fluorine from fluoridated drinking water, toothpaste, and some mouthwashes.

Too much fluoride is harmful. People (especially children) who swallow toothpaste are at risk of fluoride toxicity which can cause mottling of tooth enamel. Over time this can retard growth, destroy important enzymes, cause unwanted calcium deposits in the tendons and ligaments, disrupt the body's ability to use certain vitamins; and cause damage to the brain and central nervous system, heart, kidneys, and repoductive organs. It may also contribute to the possibility of developing osteoporosis, and there may be a link between Down's syndrome and fluoridated drinking water.

Sources of fluoride include fluoridated drinking water, food cooked in fluoridated water, tea, and some seafoods.
