Potassium

Potassium is necessary for all living cells. It is needed along with sodium to regulate the amount of fluid inside and around the body's cells and to maintain the proper acid/alkali balance of the body. It helps convert glucose to glycogen, takes part in the transmission of nerve impulses, and enables proper heart and muscle function. It is involved in protein and carbohydrate metabolism and offers moderate protection against the effects of excessive sodium consumption.

People who regularly take diuretics or laxatives are most at risk of potassium deficiency, as are those suffering dehydration, prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, or those engaged in fad dieting. Symptoms of potassium deficiency include weakness, paralysis, nervous disorders, and a slowed or irregular heartbeat; and if left untreated they can lead to death. People with diabetes, high blood pressure or liver disease have slightly higer than normal potassium requirements.

Excessive potassium consumption from supplements can lead to potassium toxicity, which is characterized by nausea, diarrhoea, heartbeat irregularities, and if left untreated, cardiac arrest.

Good sources of potassium include bananas, citrus fruit, dried fruit, milk, molasses, potatoes, fish, nuts, meat, eggs, apricots, peaches, pumpkin seeds, raisins, wholegrain cereals, legumes, and fresh fruits.
